Originally created to commemorate the friendship and help of France during our American Revolution as we fought together to break our chain from Great Britain to form a new and free independent nation. Secondly, as a symbol of America ending the practice of slavery after the Civil War in the late 1800's.

Emma Lazarus's poem, "The New Colossus," was originally used as a fundraiser for the Statue of Liberty's pedestal in 1883.
She arrived in America on June 17, 1885.
She was dedicated October 28, 1886.
Her official name is
“Liberty Enlightening the World.”

In the decades following the Civil War, the United States emerged as an industrial giant.
​
Legal Immigrants were welcomed and processed at Ellis Island. They played a significant role in the development of a growing young nation during our Industrial Revolution.
